Bull Sluice

Bull Sluice is a Class Five rapid on the Chattooga River separating South Carolina and Georgia. The current drought has taken its toll on waterfalls and on river rapids. Normally, the rapid water level is much higher, but kayakers had to walk around Bull Sluice at the level pictured above. It can be approached from either side, but the South Carolina side has a convenience center and paved trail most of the way. From the center's parking lot, follow the trail down the hill to where it forks (remember you got to walk that hill coming back). Take the right fork through the woods to the river below. From the Georgia side, follow the Chattooga River Trail upriver several hundred yards to where it forks. Take the right fork down to the river and scramble over beached debris to the river.

Directions: From Westminister, follow US 76 west about 18 miles. From Clayton, follow US 76 east about eight miles.
